History

Graduate Institute of Hakka Language and Literature (GIHLL) was established on August, 2004. We enrolled ten students in the first semester, targeting at people who like to address themselves to Hakka language and literature studies. The recruiter should acquaint oneself with basic Hakka language, because of two reasons: (1) The acquaintance with basic Hakka language enables students to deal with Hakka language’s features, so that they could master the correct pronunciation, meanings, and hence, could analyze, compare and attain to a meaningful conclusion while writing their dissertation. Through this knowledge, they might provide suggestion and method for future Hakka language studies. Or, they might gather detailed and reliable Hakka language information, through which the later generations could strive for perfection; (2) The acquaintance with basic Hakka language enables students to deal with various Hakka language problems. While writing their thesis about Hakka literature, they could sift useful Hakka information from available materials, study them thoroughly, and complete a valuable study of Hakka literature.

But presently, although the study of Hakka language has come to maturity, the study of Hakka literature is just in its beginnings. Our institute gives our initial concern on Hakka language study. We will expand our study field and direction, and construct Hakkaology, after Hakka language is paid much attention. Although the study of Hakka literature has begun, many people are still unfamiliar with the term “Hakka literature”, or even deny its existence. But we think that every literature carries on in its own way, and every literature has two traditions: folk and governmental. “Hakka literature” should include early traditional records, popular works (stories, ballads, nursery rhymes, riddles, etc.), as well as early children’s books of old-style private school. These are our future study fields. In the present, our institute is focus on Hakka language study, and conducts the study of Hakka literature slowly. When the studies of language and literature are balanced, the system and quality of our institute should be grown into maturity. Then, Institute of Hakka Language and Literature might be divided into two divisions: Hakka language and Hakka literature.
