Graduation Requirements

Undergraduate Program

(1) General Required Courses

  1. For the selection of general required courses or other requirements for graduation, please refer to the list of required courses stipulated by the department.
  2. Students are required to take "First Year English" as a general required course in the area of foreign languages.
  3. Credits of "Second Year English" will not be included in the total required credits for graduation.
  4. Among the four main areas of general education courses, students are required to take courses in the following three areas: human sciences, natural sciences, and applied sciences. In addition, students are required to take at least one course in each area.

(2) Courses Required by the Department

  1. Students are required to obtain 78 credits for courses required by the department and 50 credits for elective courses. In total, students are required to obtain at least 128 credits to graduate.
  2. Students can obtain no more than 14 credits for elective courses from other departments or universities.
  3. Students in the department are required to pass the Basic Level Hakka Language Certification Examination before they graduate.

(3) Regulations for a Double Major: According to the university guidelines for double major applications, students are required to obtain 48 credits from required professional courses (not including internship or seminar courses) and 14 credits from elective courses.

Graduate Program

Graduate students enrolled since 2015 are required to obtain at least 30 credits before completing the graduate program. The required courses taken and the credits obtained must meet the graduation requirements. Once the credits meet the requirements and a final thesis paper is approved, the graduate program is considered completed.

(1) The 30 credits required by the graduate program include 15 credits from required courses and 15 credits from elective courses.

(2) Other requirements: Graduate students in the department can obtain no more than 6 credits from courses in other departments. In addition, first-year graduate students are required to take an English proficiency test. Students are required to take additional courses if they fail the test.

(1) To complete the graduate program, graduate students in the department are required to take at least 30 credits, including 15 credits from required courses and 15 credits from elective courses.

(2) The number of credits allowed to be obtained in each semester is limited. Regular students can only obtain 3 to 12 credits in each of the first 3 semesters. Part-time students can only obtain 3 to 9 credits in each of the first 4 semesters.

(3) Students cannot take elective courses from other graduate programs offered by the department without the consent from the head of the graduate program. In total, students can obtain no more than 6 credits from elective courses from other graduate programs.

(1) Graduate students in the department must obtain credits for the following required courses:

  1. Seminar in Hakka Culture Studie
  2. Seminar on Selected Topics
  3. Political and Economic Analysis of Hakka
  4. Research Methods: Qualitative Analysis (for the program of Hakka Society and Culture)/Quantitative Methods (for the program of Hakka Politics and Economy)
(For D, students are required to choose either Research Methods: Qualitative Analysis or Quantitative Methods.)

(2) Graduate students in the department are required to obtain at least 30 credits before their graduate program is completed. Among the 30 credits, 12 credits must be from required courses and 18 credits from elective courses. No credits are awarded for the thesis. Before the graduate program is completed, credits from the required courses must be obtained and the passing requirement in the thesis examination must be fulfilled. The above list of required courses is stipulated by the university graduate program curriculum committee. The list applies to students enrolled after 2015.

(3) Graduate students in the department can only obtain 3 to 12 credits in each of the first 3 semesters. They cannot take elective courses from other colleges of National Central University without the consent from the head of the graduate program. In total, students can obtain no more than 6 credits for elective courses from other colleges.

Part-time Graduate Program

Students taking a part-time graduate program are required to obtain at least 30 credits (not including 6 credits from the thesis examination) before the program is considered completed. Among the 30 credits, 12 credits must be from four general required courses and 18 credits must be from elective courses. After these course credits are obtained, students are required to submit a thesis to obtain an additional 6 credits. Once the oral examination of the thesis is completed and the passing requirements are fulfilled, students are eligible to receive a Master's degree of Social Science from the university.

Ph. D. Program of Hakka Studies

(1) Required Courses: Seminar in Hakka Culture Studies (3 credits)

(2) Required Elective Courses (Students are required to choose two courses from the three.)

  1. Seminar on Advanced Hakka Social and Cultural Studies (Methodology) or Seminar on Advanced Hakka Social and Cultural Studies (3 credits)
  2. Seminar on Advanced Hakka linguistics (Methodology) or Seminar on Advanced Hakka linguistics (3 credits)
  3. Seminar on Advanced Hakka Political Economy (Methodology) or Seminar on Hakka Advanced Political Economy (3 credits)

(3) Elective Courses

  1. In total, students are required to obtain 12 credits from elective courses.
  2. The elective courses are decided by the dissertation advisor according to the student's area of study. The dissertation advisor can require the student to take additional advanced courses. The credits of these additional courses will not be included in the total credits for graduation.
  3. In accordance with the guidelines of the Ph. D. program, students cannot take courses from other academic institutions or colleges without the consent of their dissertation advisor and the head of the department.
  4. Students can take no more than 6 credits for courses available through the University System of Taiwan, the research-led university alliance that includes three other universities.
